SKI-DUEL EVENT
The first annual Ski-Duel event turned out to be exactly what it was designed to be. It was great family fun, with excellent competition amongst the teams entered. The event provided entertainment and humor for both those competing as well as those simply watching. The primary focus of the event was to support the always necessary and ongoing efforts of the American Cancer Society. This event managed to be very successful toward its purpose and goal by collecting $ 2,800.00 in donations. All participants of the races received T-shirts with the Ski-Duel logo on them. A number of those participants have since been seen around campus, proudly wearing the shirts while discussing the event with others. Many were pleasantly surprised at winning trophies for their participation and perhaps even more surprised and equally proud of certificates some teams received such as: “Don’t Know Right from Left Team Award,” “Most Creative Name Award,” “Best Wipeout Award,” “Turtle Speed Award,” “Best Ski Spirit Award,” along with a few others. Most of the special certificate award winners also received gift certificates for lunches and dinners at local restaurants. It was suggested that next year’s grand prize award be a large bottle of Advil and a certificate to a day spa for those competing that were not quite in the younger groups and perhaps not as flexible as those in that age group. This year’s International Service Project for the Phi Theta Kappa Organization has been “Conquering Cancer.” Such a service project has been extremely important to this particular area due to St Clair County’s very high cancer rates. As presented at the event, over 50,000 new cases of cancer will be diagnosed in Michigan this year and almost 21,000 men, women, and children in Michigan alone will die of cancer this year. The constant fight against these tragic diseases must continue without any hesitation. As stated in the letters of appreciation to donors to this event, cancer survivors of today can thank those that gave generously in the past and the cancer survivors of the future can thank those that so generously gave to this event. Please help us in thanking the list of individuals and companies listed on the preceding page that made donations toward this year’s event and the American Cancer Society. These companies and people are the exception, not the rule and should be treated as such. If you see them, say “thank you” and if you can help their businesses please try to do so by telling people you know these companies are “ Those that Care.” Please remember that the American Cancer Society is available 24 hours a day/7 days a week by calling 1-800-ACS-2345 or visit the website at www.cancer.org. We all thank the participants and donors and hope you will all be a part of our 2 nd annual Ski-Duel event next year. Dick McGrath

Lambda Mu Fall Our fall orientation was held October 7, 2005. Forty-six students show up were present, which was a good turn out. Chapter President Laura Crawford welcomed everyone and Mr. Obee told described Phi Theta Kappa. Ice Breakers got people talking to one another and with the officers. Afterwards, the officers talked about their offices and their plans for the upcoming semester. One alumna spoke at the orientation about what PTK has done for her. After the night was over, some orientees stayed to ask questions or pay membership dues. We are still holding private orientations. Call the PTK office and set up a meeting or leave a message with the time that is best for you and we will return your call. Author’s Note: My email address is prophetsjsb@yahoo.com.

Halloween Parade And Judgment House Every year on Halloween, Mainstreet Port Huron sponsors a parade downtown where kids from all over the Blue Water area come to dress up and trick-or-treat from businesses and volunteers. Lambda Mu will be participating in front of the Judgment House, which is sponsored by Students Against Drunk Driving, Mothers Against Drunk Driving, and the Hillside Weslyan Church. Also downtown for mature audiences, there is a haunted house at 311 Huron Ave. The cost is $12 per person ($2 off with a student ID). It is open Oct. 26 & 27 (6 to10pm), October 28 & 29 (6pm to midnight) and Oct. 30 (6 to 11pm).
The Final Word… As the Mu News Editor, it is my job to put together the news piece. But I can only work with what I am given.Any PTK officer or member is free to submit as many articles as he or she likes, each month. As always, they count two points each towards enhancement. I also want to thank October’s contributors. Congratulations to all of the All-USA nominees. You have worked hard to earn it. Also, another thanks goes out to all of the businesses and members who dedicated many long hours to Ski-Duel.
